WWDC 2024 Leaks: As we are a few hours away from the rumoured unveiling of iOS 18 at the Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC) 2024, leaked features of the OS continue to crop up. According to MacRumors, the company could introduce Dark Mode customisation for the app icons on the home screen. Moreover, Apple could bring Face ID-based unlocking for apps.
iOS 18 Update Expectations: Dark Mode For Icons
For the unaware, the company introduced Dark Mode in iOS 13 to introduce darker elements across the UI interface, including the home screen. While these element alterations are available for dock and folders, these may expand to app icons to give them a black/dark tint when a user has enabled Dark Mode.
The feature may be limited to system apps initially. It may be available to third-party apps via an application programming interface (API). Bloomberg's Mark Gurman recently hinted the company could allow users to change app icon colours. The dark mode functionality could be tied to this feature.
iOS 18 Feature Expectations: Face ID-Based App Lock
The company could allow iPhone users to lock individual apps with Face ID. This may be available for system apps for added security layer for these devices. MacRumors speculates the option may work with Touch ID and the iPhone's passcode also. However, it is unknown whether it will support third-party apps.
For the unaware, the company already allow users to lock certain sections of the app behind Face ID, such as notes in Notes and "Recently Deleted" and "Hidden" albums in Photos. The new feature could help users lock apps entirely and skip methods like using Screen Time or Shortcuts.
iOS 18 Beta Release Date (Expectations)
The company will likely unveil iOS 18 at the WWDC 2024 on June 10, and the Developer Preview beta will go live for testers today. The Public beta is expected to roll out next month. The stable build could follow in the first half of September around the launch of the iPhone 16 series.
