While we are months away from the launch of the iPhone 16 series, the rumour mill has started churning details of the iPhone 17 series. According to Chinese tipster Instant Digital, the iPhone 17 could get an "anti-reflective" and a "more scratch-resistant" outer layer. Citing the tipster, MacRumors reported the upcoming models may offer better scratch resistance than Apple's Ceramic Shield.
While the tipster has a mixed track record of leaks, the Chinese leaker claimed the equipment has reached the Chinese supply chain. However, chances are low that the upgrade could debut with the iPhone 16 series this year. From the information, it seems the company is preparing an upgrade for the Ceramic Shield, which was developed in partnership with Corning and first debuted on the iPhone 12.
It could be similar to the Gorilla Glass Armor on the Samsung Galaxy S24 Ultra, which "reduces reflectance by up to 75 per cent" to enhance readability and minimise reflections, according to Corning. Further, it is four times more scratch-resistant than aluminosilicate cover glass and performs three times better in drop tests.

It is unclear if the tech giant is resorting to the Armor glass or again cooking something fresh with a brand partnership. Meanwhile, the iPhone 17 Pro series is expected to offer an in-screen Face ID and a punch-hole notch for the front camera, according to MacRumors. The vanilla 17 and 17 Plus could debut with a 120Hz screen. Plus, the entire lineup may offer a 24MP selfie lens.
On a related note, ahead of the iPhone 17 series, the iPhone 16 series will likely launch in September 2024. The lineup could include iPhone 16, iPhone 16 Plus, iPhone 16 Pro and iPhone 16 Pro Max. These may debut with a range of AI-packed features in iOS 18 that will likely be showcased at the Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC) 2024.
