Apple's first foldable iPhone – reported as the iPhone Fold – looks set to become one of the most powerful smartphones ever produced by the company. Although its exact design remains a mystery, new leaks suggest the device will launch with Apple's next-generation A20 Pro chip built using TSMC's 2nm process, offering significant increases in efficiency and performance over the current A19 Pro chip found in iPhone 17 Pro series devices.

iPhone Fold Could Be Apple’s Most Powerful Device Yet

Mobile Phone Chip Expert (MPCE), according to reports on Weibo by tipster Mobile Phone Chip Expert (MPCE), claims the A20 Pro chipset will power both Apple's iPhone 18 Pro series and its first foldable phone expected in 2026 or 2027. Switching from TSMC's 3 nm fabrication technology to 2 nm could bring significant increases in speed, thermal efficiency and battery life.

The A20 Pro should provide faster CPU and GPU performance with lower power consumption – essential features of foldable devices relying on large displays with large battery requirements. If used by Apple's iPhone Fold, this chip could set new standards in foldable performance – surpassing even Samsung's Galaxy Z series in raw power consumption.

Potential Pricing Challenges Ahead

However, these advancements come at a cost. As per a report from China Times, TSMC’s 2nm manufacturing process is about 50% more expensive than its 3nm predecessor. The semiconductor giant has heavily invested in new infrastructure to enable 2nm production, and that cost is expected to trickle down to Apple.

Apple's first foldable phone could reach $2,000+ and become one of the priciest iPhones ever released, according to industry insiders.

What This Means for Apple’s 2026–2027 Lineup

The A20 chip is expected to power the base iPhone 18 models, while the A20 Pro will be reserved for the higher-end variants and the iPhone Fold. There are also doubts about a potential “iPhone Air 2,” as its predecessor didn’t perform well commercially.

Still, the A20 Pro’s debut could mark a turning point for Apple’s hardware strategy — combining next-gen processing power with innovative design. If the leaks are accurate, the iPhone Fold won’t just be Apple’s first foldable — it could also be its most advanced and ambitious iPhone yet.
