Apple, a Cupertino-based tech giant, has repeatedly considered manufacturing iPhones away from China. And, it seems the emphasis is steadily shifting towards India. The company, along with its suppliers, plans to make 50 million iPhones per year in the country in the next 2-3 years, according to The Wall Street Journal. Citing sources, the news outlet added that in the subsequent years, additional tens of millions of units are planned.

According to Engadget, this would constitute about 25 per cent of the total iPhone production. However, China shall continue to be the lead player in the iPhone's supply chain with a significant margin. Foxconn and other production arms of Apple believe the push for production in India is moving well, which is preparing a fertile field for the future.

The firm headed slowly due to the infrastructural shortcomings and the influential unions that have pushed restrictive labour rules. Piyush Goyal, the Minister of Commerce and Industry, had earlier signalled the change this year in January. However, the Union Minister did not share a timeline.

The speculated time frame can be a surprising production upscaling, considering Apple released the India-made iPhone 15 for the first time in history on the launch day in the country this year. Foxconn will reportedly manufacture more iPhone 15 devices than the previous generation models in Tamil Nadu as the company aims to diversify production amid the ongoing tensions in US-China relations.

The supplier will reportedly open a large production facility in Karnataka (which will likely be functional in April 2024), with another plant already on the cards, WSJ reported. Earlier, iPhone production in India lagged by up to nine months compared with China. However, this reversed with the iPhone 14 when the production kicked off in the same month. Plus, this was boosted with the production of the iPhone 15 as it was available in offline stores on launch day.
