TATA Group is all set to join the list of contract manufacturers of the upcoming Apple iPhone models. With the move, the tech giant aims to diversify production resources from China post geopolitical tensions and pandemic-induced restrictions. As per TrendForce, the Tata Group could become the fourth assembler for iPhone models other than Foxconn, Luxshare and Pegatron.

On the lines of Apple's protocol, the group will initially receive orders for the iPhone 15 and iPhone 15 Plus. In the distribution assembly order shared by the platform, Tata Group has been assigned 5 per cent orders of both these models.

As for other orders, Foxconn, among the oldest manufacturers, will assemble 70 per cent, and Luxshare will make 25 per cent of iPhone 15. Moving to iPhone 15 Plus, Luxshare will have 60 per cent, and Pegatron will clock a 35 per cent share in production. A point worth noting in the data shared in the report include the missing allocation of 5 per cent of iPhone 15 Pro Max assembly orders.

The report highlighted the implications of this business change:

- Firstly, India would become "the first wave of shipments" for the upcoming iPhone 15 series.

- Secondly, the production process would be made possible by the acquired Wistron Indian production plant. The emergence of Tata on the scene also implies Wistron's exit from the assembly space.

- Thirdly, India's largest conglomerate would be the fourth participant after Luxshare, who joined in 2020 to assemble iPhone 12 Pro Max.

As per South China Morning Post, the Wistron facility span 2.2 million-square-foot and is located around 50 kilometres east of Bangalore, the capital of Karnataka.

India seems to be a tested case for labour supply and technology. Continuing its business expansion in India, Apple opened two official stores in the country. One in Mumbai and the other in New Delhi. Meanwhile, the iPhone 15 series will likely have Dynamic Island on all models, a USB Type-C port, upgrades in chassis construction and more, according to reports.
