Apple may be gearing up for an aggressive Mac refresh cycle in 2026, according to reports by AppleInsider and reports claiming multiple devices powered by its next-gen M5 chipset will be upgraded across their lineup - from MacBook Pro, MacBook Air and Mini computers all the way down to Studio designs - as it continues its push towards pushing performance further with in-house silicon.
First M5 Mac Could Arrive by Late 2025
According to reports, the first device equipped with an M5 chip will likely be a new MacBook Pro due to launch by early 2025. Based on testing done with macOS Tahoe (version 26.0.2) sources have identified J704 as possibly being this M5-powered MacBook Pro model.

Apple’s retail supply for the current MacBook Pro is said to be tightening — often a sign of an impending refresh. Adding fuel to the speculation, the US FCC recently listed an unreleased MacBook Pro model number, hinting at an official reveal before year’s end.
M5 MacBook Air Expected in Early 2026
After the Pro, Apple is expected to introduce the M5 MacBook Air later this year. Codenamed J813 (13-inch) and J815 (15-inch), these lightweight models should begin shipping with macOS 26.2 in early 2026 - following its predecessor M4 Air which first debuted in March 2025 - suggesting an annual update cycle for Air series products.
M5 Pro and M5 Max MacBook Pro Variants Coming Next Year
For power users, Apple is said to be developing M5 Pro and M5 Max variants of the MacBook Pro, identified internally as J714 and J716. These high-performance machines will maintain the 14-inch and 16-inch designs, running on macOS 26.3, and are tipped to launch in the first quarter of 2026 — following the pattern of previous Pro and Max rollouts.

Mac mini, Mac Studio, and iMac Refreshes Planned
Apple is expanding the M5 family beyond portables; development for Mac Mini (J873s, J873g) and Studio models using macOS 26.4 is underway, and these desktop devices could debut by mid-2026 - thus expanding M5 beyond portables. Furthermore, references have been spotted about an iMac (J833ct), although details remain scanty.
Bottom Line
If the reports hold true, Apple’s 2026 lineup will mark one of the most ambitious Mac refreshes in years — spanning everything from the ultra-portable Air to the powerhouse Studio. With the M5 chip series expected to deliver major gains in performance and efficiency, the next generation of Macs could redefine what Apple Silicon is capable of once again.
