Apple has reportedly pressed pause on its plans for a lower-priced Vision Pro headset and is instead putting its weight behind smart glasses powered by AI. According to Bloomberg, the teams that were earlier working on the affordable headset have now been reassigned to speed up development of the new glasses.

The decision comes as competition in smart eyewear heats up, with Meta recently unveiling the latest version of its Ray-Ban AI glasses. Apple seems keen to carve out its own space in this segment rather than chase a cheaper version of the $3,499 Vision Pro.

No Vision Air for Now

Rumours about a so-called "Vision Air", a lighter and more affordable Vision Pro variant, had circulated for months, with a possible 2027 launch being speculated. But that roadmap now appears to be shelved, with resources redirected toward the glasses project.

Apple’s Smart Glasses Plan

Apple’s smart glasses are expected to feature built-in cameras, microphones, and AI-driven software, much like Meta’s Ray-Bans. Sources suggest an early showcase could happen next year, with a broader rollout targeted for 2027. Initially, they will need to stay tethered to an iPhone for full functionality.

Unlike Meta’s current lineup, Apple plans to integrate its updated Siri—slated to debut in 2026—as the primary way users interact with the glasses. The company is also reportedly exploring different frame shapes, colours, and even health-focused sensors for future versions.

Style Meets Tech

Apple is positioning the glasses not just as wearables but also as fashion accessories. They’re said to come in different materials and finishes, aligning them with the premium aesthetic the company is known for.

Display Version in the Pipeline

The first model won’t include a built-in display. Apple had initially aimed for 2028 for display-equipped versions but is now fast-tracking that timeline, likely in response to Meta’s new Ray-Ban Display glasses, which can project text, images, and AI information directly into the wearer’s view.

Price and Launch Timeline

Pricing details remain under wraps, though Apple’s history suggests they won’t be cheap. The initial version may hit the market in 2026, with a wider release in 2027.

Vision Pro Still Alive

While the budget Vision Pro is shelved, Apple isn’t abandoning its headset lineup altogether. A refreshed Vision Pro model, expected to feature the upcoming M5 chip, is still on track for release later this year.
