ChatGPT Market Share: There has been a growing interest in AI language model apps all over the globe, and in this ever-growing race ChatGPT has maintained its position as the most downloaded chatbot worldwide, it has showcased remarkable growth and dominance when it comes to solidifying its position in the US market. However, one must take into notice that emerging markets are showing signs of rising competition, with competitors like Google Gemini consolidating its position in the Indian market and other smaller AI competitors gaining hold over the markets in Latin American nations.

ChatGPT's Growth Statistics in the US
When we take the third quarter of 2024 into account, the data shows that ChatGPT was able to secure very good numbers in terms of downloads with figures adding up to an overwhelming 90 million downloads, which is an increase of more than 100% on year-on-year basis. The app currently has a hold over 45% of the US mobile download market share, which is an increase of 3 percentage points when we compare the stats to previous years' records.

The app’s growth was further accelerated by the release of its GPT-4O model in May 2024. ChatGPT posted a nine-fold rise in revenue year-on-year in 3Q24 accounting for 60% of the market share. This helped not only in bolstering its user base but also attracted substantial revenue, which propelled its growth taking it ahead of its competitors in the US. Other contenders that were the top-grossing apps include, ChatOn, Chat&Ask AI, and ChatBox, which accounted for 25% of the US market share during the same period.
Rising Competition from Emerging Markets
Even though ChatGPT has got a grasp over the market in the US, it is facing stiff competition from emerging markets. Let's take India's example where Google Gemini is gaining ground with a staggering 50% of the country's AI chatbot download market share. The same scenario reflects itself when it comes to Latin American nations where smaller AI apps are gaining ground and expanding rapidly, and all this means one thing for ChatGPT and that is growing pressure for the company to expand its global outreach.
When we talk about organic growth and the number of organic downloads in the US, the current top spot is occupied by Character AI with 86% of its downloads coming organically, which surpasses ChatGPT by a factor of 5% with its share currently standing at 81% through organic downloads. Other competitors like Microsoft Copilot(71%), Perplexity(68%) and Google Gemini(53%) are also catching up in the race, particularly with growing users outside the US market.
Record App Adoption and Engagement
ChatGPT has made significant strides when it comes to its growth in the user base. In 3Q24 the app posted a phenomenal increase of over 160 million monthly active users (MAUs), which is the largest when we compare the stats with its competitors. ChatGPT was able to attract 50 million worldwide MAUs in just 5 months, which is a remarkable feat when we compare it to apps like Disney+ and Temu which took 12 and 8 months respectively to conquer a similar goal.

When we talk about cross-app usage, data reveals that Perplexity users, in particular, have a high engagement rate with ride-hailing services like Uber (42%) and Lyft (28%), a trend which is less evident amongst the users of ChatGPT and Copilot. The credit here goes to the promotion of free subscriptions provided by Perplexity to Uber One members, this showcases a successful penetration into the urban user base.
Targeted Advertising and Regional Focus
In 2024, AI platforms in the US have increasingly targeted ad spending towards California, with Claude (18%) and Perplexity (15%) leading the way. San Francisco, the heart of the tech industry, was the top city for ad spend for both Claude and Perplexity, while New York emerged as a key market for Microsoft’s Copilot. This adoption of investment in regional ads reflects a focus on urban areas and business hubs where adaptation towards tech is in vogue.
In terms of impressions, Gemini stood out for its presence in newspapers and digital-first outlets, while for Microsoft Copilot over-the-top(OTT) platforms, with over 130 million impressions.
ChatGpt currently continues to dominate the markets in the US, but it needs a strategy to address the increasing competition it is getting from the emerging markets. With Google Gemini and Perplexity consolidating their hold in India and Latin America respectively the race for global dominance in the AI chatbot market is immensely intensifying. Whether ChatGPT will be able to maintain its stronghold and get a hold over the global markets is yet to be seen.
