Indian IT Minister Rajeev Chandrasekhar has reacted to the recent remarks of a user on X (formerly Twitter) who flagged that a response from Google's Gemini AI engine is biased against Narendra Modi, Prime Minister of India. Chandrasekhar added that the response is in "direct violations" of the provisions of the IT Act and violates other provisions of the Criminal code.

The minister reposted a response from Firstpost's Senior Editor Sreemoy Talukdar, who flagged a response of Gemini concerning fascism on the Indian PM. Talukdar further flagged the inconsistencies in responses when Gemini was questioned about the same query on other leaders, such as Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and former US President Donald Trump.

"These are direct violations of Rule 3(1)(b) of Intermediary Rules (IT rules) of the IT act and violations of several provisions of the Criminal code," @Rajeev_GoI said. The minister also marked the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology and Google India in his post.

The journalist who reshared it called Gemini "woke" and "downright malicious". The post was first shared by Arnab Ray, an author and a columnist at the Times of India, according to the account's X description. Google's AI experiments have raised questions in the past around the production of controversial content.

On a related note, Google has paused the ability to let Gemini AI generate images of people after controversies around AI-generated historical images emerged. X owner Elon Musk also posted about the update and accused Google of "insane racist, anti-civilisational programming" on its AI applications.

Google first introduced image generation capabilities and announced a rename of Bard to Gemini. Developed by Google DeepMind, Google's "most capable" AI model was launched in December last year to take on OpenAI's viral chatbot ChatGPT. It can perform functions such as text generation, answering queries and more, and comes in varying trims depending on user requirements.
