Diwali 2023: As India celebrates the festival of lights, people capture these moments on smartphones to cherish them later. Apart from photos, short videos have been in craze lately due to the rise of platforms like Instagram Reels, YouTube Shorts and more. And if you are a creator who uses smartphones for shooting reels, you are expected to serve the audience with high-quality content this festive season.

A premium smartphone, with the right training, can be more than enough to capture high-resolution output in terms of picture quality. Use Artificial Light

While the light is not an issue in daylight, for the night, you must opt for some soft light equipment which can illuminate the scene and control noise levels in the video. If shooting in manual mode, keep the ISO at a minimum. You can play around with filters, background blur settings (in available phones), stabilisation and shoot at higher frame rates depending on your needs. But make sure to preserve the natural look of the environment.

Manual Settings

If your phone supports a dedicated manual mode, it can help you significantly. But if you are new to these toggles, you can check out free tutorials on YouTube to learn more. For quick tips, ensure the video is well-balanced to preserve shadows and not miss the highlights. Switch to manual focus rather than autofocus for better results.

Video Quality Preferences

Next up is video quality. If you are shooting a Diwali short vlog, prefer a higher frame rate (60fps) and 1080p quality. If you are shooting a cinematic reel, stick to 24fps and choose the highest quality possible (which may go up to 8K on some Android flagships). You can also play around with slow-mo, hyperlapse and other settings to extract interesting results.

Experiment with Angles and Shots

Make sure to experiment with your camera angles for better results. For instance, a low-angle shot of a diya may turn out better than a top-angle shot where it is difficult to capture the flame. Also, compose the shot well to include festive elements in your frame. Plus, giving enough room to your subject is equally important. If you have a telephoto sensor and an OIS-enabled phone, you can experiment with fast movements in zoom, dolly, tilt, pan shots and more.
