JE Technology Desk: Facebook is among the popular social networking app having a global audience. A profile on the platform includes memories in the form of photos, videos and more and losing them might be scary to some. This was the case with a Georgia man who sued the platform over receding access to his account, reports Fox 5 Atlanta. And the outcome will surprise many.
Jason Crawford, from Georgia, United States, was unable to access his Facebook account one fine day. While his account was suspended in the past for his political opinions, this time, things were different.
"I woke up one Sunday morning. I tapped on my Facebook icon, and I was locked out," Crawford said. No proper reason was shared by the company for his account seizure. As a result, the man reached out to Facebook for a fix. But the efforts were futile as he could not find a company representative to speak with.
While lacking access to his account, Crawford termed the account recovery process "like a dog chasing its tail." And lastly, he decided to resort to a lawsuit. The affected account holder also was a lawyer.
In a complaint that dates back to August 2022, the company was termed "negligent" for not allowing Crawford access to his Facebook account based on a "violation [of child exploitation rules] that did not occur."
"I had, I don't even know how you quantify it, pictures, videos, posts that you know come up as memories that I like to look at from time to time. Ya know, all that kind of stuff that I wasn't willing to let a bunch of bullies take away from me for no reason," he told the media outlet.
While the social media platform ignored his appeal, Crawford emerged as a winner in the case, and the judge ordered the company to pay the affected user $50,000 (roughly Rs 41 lakh). Post the judgement, Crawford's Facebook account was restored.
While he has received access to his account, the company has not cleared the penalty yet.
