Google has taken significant steps to improve Gmail security by adding a new layer of verification for sensitive actions. This improvement builds on last year's effort to enhance security within Google Workspace accounts. The company has now expanded these measures to include sensitive actions performed in Gmail.

Users will now see verification prompts when performing actions like adding a new forwarding address, making a new filter, or editing an existing filter, the company wrote in its blog post. The designated sensitive actions include adding new forwarding addresses from the Forwarding and POP/IMAP settings, editing filters, importing filters, and enabling IMAP access status.

When a user performs one of these actions, Google will evaluate the session that the activity. A "Verify it's you" prompt will be displayed to the user if the session is thought to be potentially dangerous. Users can use a second trusted factor, like a 2-step verification code, to confirm the action's validity.

Users will be informed of any potential security breaches by receiving a "Critical security alert" notification on their trusted devices in cases where a verification challenge is unsuccessful or remains unfinished.

Notably, this feature only applies to actions taken within Google products and supports users who use Google as their identity provider. According to Google, users who use Security Assertion Markup Language (SAML) are not currently part of the supported user base.
