Google is expanding the reach of its Gemini AI assistant, making it available on Google Docs for Android. Previously limited to the desktop version for paid Workspace users, the powerful AI tool is now rolling out to select Android users, marking another step in Google’s push to integrate AI more deeply across its ecosystem.

Gemini AI Comes to Mobile Docs

In a recent blog post, Google confirmed that Gemini will now be accessible directly within the Google Docs Android app via a new side panel interface. To use it, you’ll need to be on an eligible paid plan—like Google Workspace Business or Enterprise, or have Gemini Education or Education Premium add-ons.

Once enabled, you’ll spot the Gemini icon (a sparkle symbol) at the top of the Docs app. Tapping it opens a bottom panel where you can chat with the assistant to get things done more efficiently. On mobile, Gemini can help summarize documents, highlight key points, suggest improvements, and answer questions based on your file’s content.

Multi-language Support and Use Cases

Gemini is designed for a global audience, supporting over 20 languages, including French, German, Chinese, Japanese, Spanish, and more. Google says the AI assistant is great for tasks like quickly summarizing long reports, pulling answers from spreadsheets or policy docs, or even drafting content from a simple prompt.

That said, the Android version has some limitations. While it covers basic productivity features, it currently doesn’t support tools like “Help me write,” “Help me create,” or image generation, which remain exclusive to the desktop experience.

Part of a Bigger AI Rollout

This mobile integration is part of a broader rollout of Gemini across Google's platforms. Just this week, Google also introduced scheduled actions in the Gemini app, giving users the ability to set reminders, schedule tasks, and manage their day more easily using AI. That feature is currently available to those on Google AI Pro or Ultra plans, and to select Workspace business and education users.

Google’s latest updates show a clear direction: bringing advanced AI tools to more users, across more devices. While Gemini on Android Docs might not have all the bells and whistles of the desktop version just yet, it’s a strong start—and a glimpse into what’s coming next for AI-powered productivity on the go.
