Google reported additional increases to the performance of their browser, claiming that Google Chrome has received the highest score ever on the Speedometer 3 benchmark. In a statement by the Product Manager for Chrome, Thomas Nattestad, the browser's optimisations have lifted its performance 10 per cent over the last couple of months since the last quarter in 2024. This achievement has come as Google has continued to work on its browser engine’s rendering and overall responsiveness. Aside from these benefits, 3.1 has also been released on the Speedometer, which marks another step towards the advancement of benchmark testing.

Chrome Achieves Best-Ever Score on Speedometer 3

As for now, the complete set of test results marks the best performance of the Chrome application. With Speedometer 3, Chrome now leads web browser benchmarks in terms of performance.

The tests were conducted on a MacBook Pro with Apple’s M4 chip running macOS 15, ensuring high-end hardware conditions.

What Led to the Performance Gains?

The boost in performance has been credited, Google claims, to very specific changes made to the browser's rendering pipeline, such as:

  • Refining fundamental rendering paths across the browser stack
  • Improving garbage collection efficiency
  • Focusing computational power on performance-heavy functions
  • Optimising key workloads based on Speedometer 3 testing patterns

These changes were made about the specific areas of processing time that Chrome was utilising most, allowing for great improvements in speed while still maintaining a high degree of stability and reliability.

Chrome vs. Other Browsers

Other popular browsers that employ Google's Blink rendering engine, which runs Chrome, are:

  • Microsoft Edge
  • Opera
  • Vivaldi

Chrome still surpasses other browsers in terms of performance because of continuous development and benchmarking performed by Google. It should be emphasised that while several technology companies, including Apple, Intel, Microsoft, and Mozilla, participate in the development of Speedometer, not all browser makers publish scores in detail.

Speedometer 3.1 Now the Benchmark Standard

As much as Google’s blog post emphasises results from Speedometer 3, the tool, along with its newer 3.1 version, is now the designated standard. Currently, there has been no disclosure of Chrome's performance on Speedometer 3.1, thus leaving room for more insights in future updates.

Long-Term Performance Trends

As reported by Google, Chrome’s Speedometer score has increased by 72 per cent since May 2022 due to focused efforts on performance tuning during the last two years.

Final Thoughts

The recent development of Chrome achieving the highest score ever on the Speedometer 3 benchmark confirms Google's commitment to improving the browser's performance. The 72 per cent improvement from 2022 has further solidified Chrome's position as a top contender among modern browsers. With Google's now focus turning to the latest 3.1 standard, users can expect even greater improvements in the near future.
