Google’s smart home ecosystem is undergoing one of its biggest transformations yet. Last week, the company rolled out a wave of announcements—from Gemini for Home and Google Home Premium subscriptions to new Nest hardware and a redesigned Google Home app. With so many changes, the tech giant has now published a detailed community post titled “Top Questions & Answers about Gemini for Home, Google Home Premium, and more.”
What Is Gemini for Home?
Google officially confirmed that Gemini for Home will act as the next-generation AI assistant for the smart home ecosystem. It replaces Google Assistant with Gemini, offering advanced automation, real-time control, and conversational intelligence.

Free Features for All Users
Even without a subscription, all Google Home users will get the following core Gemini for Home features:
Ask Home: Search for devices or automations directly in the Home app.
Simple Device Queries: Ask questions like “Which lights are on?” or “Is the front door locked?”
Real-Time Controls: Use instant commands such as “Close all blinds.”
Automatic Upgrade: Google Assistant will seamlessly upgrade to Gemini at no extra cost.
Availability, Early Access, and Supported Devices
Initial Rollout: Began on October 1, 2025 for cameras and doorbells in the US, Canada, the UK, Australia, New Zealand, and Ireland.
Next Phase: Smart speakers and displays in the US will get Gemini later this month, with a global rollout expected in early 2026.
How to Join Early Access
1. Update your Google Home app to version 4.0 or higher.
2. Go to Settings → Early Access.
3. Sign up to test Gemini for Home features before wider release.
Note: The Early Access program for Gemini is separate from the Google Home Public Preview program, which focuses on app features.
Supported Devices
- Gemini for Home will be available on:
- All Nest cameras and doorbells since 2015
- New Walmart Onn models
All Google and Nest speakers/displays made since 2016, including Nest Audio, Nest Hub, Google Home, and Home Mini
Older Nest devices must be migrated from the Nest app to the Google Home app for compatibility. Google also confirmed that third-party smart speakers will gain support in the future.
Google Home Premium Plans Explained
The new Google Home Premium subscription tiers will replace Nest Aware, offering expanded AI and security capabilities.
Google Home Premium Standard Plan
Includes:
- Gemini for Home core features
- Gemini Live for more natural voice interactions
- Create automations using natural language
- 30 days of event video history
- Smart alerts
Google Home Premium Advanced Plan
Includes everything in the Standard plan, plus:
- Advanced camera intelligence
- AI event descriptions and notifications
- “Home Brief” daily summary
- Searchable video history through Ask Home
- 60 days of event video history
- 10 days of 24/7 continuous recording

What Happens to Existing Subscribers?
Nest Aware users are automatically moved to the Standard plan.
Nest Aware Plus users now have the Advanced plan.
Google AI Pro subscribers receive Google Home Premium Standard at no extra cost.
Google AI Ultra subscribers get the Advanced plan included.
Users can upgrade from Standard to Advanced for $10/month.
ADT customers will continue using Nest Aware features tied to their ADT subscriptions for now.
The Bigger Picture
Google is obviously combining AI intelligence with smart home control with Gemini for Home and Google Home Premium, forming a single ecosystem where voice commands, automation, and personalization all function in unison.
According to the company, the objective is to create more proactive and intuitive homes that preserve privacy and transparency while learning from user behavior.
