Google has delayed to 2026 a complete replacement of Google Assistant for Gemini on Android devices. The company previously said the switch would be completed by the end of 2025, a timeline that has since been updated.

Google acknowledged the delay on its official Gemini Apps community forum, explaining that it needs more time “to provide a seamless transition” for users. With just weeks remaining in 2025, the company acknowledged that more work was needed on migrating millions of Assistant users to Gemini across Android phones and tablets.

Google Assistant’s long run is nearing its end

The company’s marquee voice assistant had been Google Assistant, which was introduced in 2016 and has been the big G’s main voice tech for upwards of eight years. In March 2025, Google revealed it would be replaced by Gemini on the majority of mobile devices as part of its broader move to generative AI-driven interactions.

Google Assistant will be removed from Gemini-eligible devices when the transition is finished; these are devices that we’ve confirmed use this minimum threshold requirement, such as Android 10 or higher and a minimum of 2GB of RAM. App stores will no longer have the standalone Google Assistant app.

Gemini rollout continues on other platforms

Google has already implemented Gemini into other places, and the migration for Android has relatively slowed. That includes Wear OS smartwatches, Android Auto and Google Home devices. The company has also added features that allow users to make calls, send messages and set timers through Gemini without requiring the collection of training data for AI.

Google says it will announce more about its updated expansion efforts in the months ahead. At least in the near future, Google Assistant won’t be going away altogether, though as of today its role has been more “when” than “if” replaced by Gemini.
