Google is taking steps to further strengthen Android security with a feature that could revolutionise how users manage passkeys. According to details revealed during an APK teardown, Android will receive automatic passkey upgrades – eliminating manual upgrades and improving overall user protection. Google is taking steps toward passwordless authentication and seamless login methods that provide users with faster, more secure access across devices without the hassle of managing outdated credentials. Furthermore, this upgrade will simplify onboarding for those new to passkeys while keeping Android ahead in mobile security competition. Although not live yet, its discovery suggests it could make its debut soon with an upcoming Android update.
Android Authority recently conducted an intriguing teardown that brings exciting news for Android users: it appears Google Password Manager might soon automatically upgrade your passwords to passkeys – this would be a game-changer as passkeys are much safer and more convenient than traditional usernames/passwords for online security.
Google Passkeys
Google has fully embraced passkeys as an alternative to passwords, giving users a safer and simpler way to sign in. Chrome can convert website passwords automatically to passkeys; Google Password Manager for Android should soon follow suit.
Found some cool stuff digging into the latest Google Play Services beta (version 25.19.31). Looks like the Google Password Manager on Android might be getting automatic passkey updates.
Google Password Manager makes this feature even more seamless by automatically upgrading all website and app credentials on your phone to passkeys without asking your explicit permission first. When signing into a supported service with password authentication, Google Password Manager will upgrade them seamlessly into passkeys while notifying you.
This would be an extremely useful feature as you currently must log into websites or apps before upgrading manually to passkeys. However, this feature can easily be disabled if you still prefer passwords for authentication or would rather maintain more control over passkey generation.
Passkeys provide an easier, more secure alternative to usernames and passwords. This technology allows you to log into services or apps by entering your device PIN or scanning fingerprints/facial recognition technology; then store this passkey locally so it is stored only once on one device, but sync up other devices via cloud sync synchronization.
