If you’ve tried both Google Gemini and OpenAI’s ChatGPT, you’ll know they each have their own take on customizable workspaces. Gemini has Gems, while ChatGPT offers Projects. Both let you create a tailored space that remembers your instructions, preferences, and style. But here’s the big difference now: Google just made Gems shareable, giving it an edge over ChatGPT’s Projects.

How Shared Gems Work

Until now, Gems were locked to your own account. You could set one up for brainstorming a business plan, planning workouts, or drafting content, but no one else could access it. That changes with the new update.

Sharing a Gem works exactly like sharing a Google Doc or Sheet:

- Click the Share icon in the Gem manager

- Enter names or groups

- Choose whether others can view or edit

- Or generate a shareable link

This seamless integration is something OpenAI currently can’t match, since it doesn’t have Google’s ecosystem of productivity tools.

Availability and Restrictions

Not everyone gets to use this feature right away. Shared Gems are available only for Gemini Pro subscribers and higher, meaning free users won’t see the option.

Why It Matters

Gemini's move strengthens its position as a collaborative AI tool, making it simpler for teams, classrooms or friends to collaborate in real time on ideas in real time. By contrast, ChatGPT Projects remain private workspaces without built-in sharing capabilities.
