Google is taking steps to make Gemini a more natural conversational assistant. Currently, most AI voice assistants cut you off the moment you pause, unless you’re using Gemini Live or ChatGPT Voice Mode. But a new feature in testing could change that.

In Google app version 16.42.61, references suggest Gemini will soon let users long-press the mic icon in its input box—similar to WhatsApp’s voice note lock. Once activated, the mic stays active until you press and release the stop button, providing ample time for longer queries to develop before being forced into submission too quickly. It is ideal for use when responding to longer queries that require longer thought processes before submitting them as requests.

Google is also testing cosmetic updates:

Floating input box tweaks – The box now expands when typing, mimicking Gemini’s dedicated interface on Android.

Movable Gemini Live overlay button – Users can snap it to six positions on the screen (top, centre, bottom, left or right). This adds flexibility while using the AI overlay without blocking content.

Conclusion

While these features are in early testing and not guaranteed to roll out widely, they signal Google’s effort to improve continuous, natural voice interactions. Once released, the locked mic could make Gemini far more conversational and user-friendly, especially for complex or multi-step queries.

This update could finally allow Gemini to rival other AI voice assistants in sustained, thoughtful conversations without cutting users off prematurely.
