Android and iOS have always borrowed ideas from one another, but this time the inspiration is flowing the other way. Google is reportedly developing a contact-sharing feature that works much like Apple’s Contact Posters and NameDrop. On iPhones, bringing two devices close lets users instantly share a personalised contact card. It’s quick, it’s simple, and it removes all the friction of manually typing someone’s details. Now, based on new code spotted inside Google Play Services, Android looks set to get its own version. The feature appears to be called Gesture Exchange, and early signs suggest that Google wants to make the process just as fluid as Apple’s approach—while giving users more control over what they share.

Google’s Version of Contact Posters Takes Shape

Android Authority found references to “Gesture Exchange” and “ContactExchangeActivity,” along with mentions of NDEF, the NFC data format used for tap-based interactions. That points to an NFC-powered system where placing two phones close together triggers the exchange.

Unlike Apple’s Contact Posters, Google’s version appears to emphasise choice. Users can decide exactly which details to share—photo, phone number, email, or none at all. There’s even a “Receive Only” mode for those who prefer not to send anything but still want to collect someone else’s information.

What the Receiver Sees

Once the phones connect, the recipient gets only the details the sender approved. A single tap saves the card as a new contact. That’s it. No menus to sort through, no accidental sharing, and no surprises.

It may not yet be available, but functional UI elements and code strings indicate active development of this feature. If Google sticks with its usual Android release cycle, there's a strong possibility this feature could appear in an upcoming Play Services update and reach users well before its inclusion into a major Android release.

Final Thoughts

Gesture Exchange appears to be an efficient and user-friendly solution for Android's need of an easier way to share contact details. Once Google perfects its interface and privacy controls, this could quickly become one of those essential daily features people rely on every day. Though still under development, Gesture Exchange appears poised to provide users with a simple tap-to-share experience similar to iOS's ease of use.
