Vivo’s upcoming set of S-series phones are nearing their launch and the leaks have given us an idea of what to expect from them. The soon-to-be-launched Vivo S50 and Vivo S50 Pro Mini, which are together referred to as the Vivo S50 series, appear to be on course for a December launch with an all-new Snapdragon processor that is positioned right below Qualcomm's flagship Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5. What it does reveal, however, is that Vivo seems to be marketing the S50 series as performance-centric mid-premium additions over the previous Vivo S30 range. Early reports also suggest an updated lock-screen design new display size(s), revved-up camera hardware and lightweight armour for online-first buyers in China.
Expected Specifications and Key Features
Tipster Digital Chat Station has claimed that the alleged Vivo S50 series is codenamed Battle Angel and could be launched in China as early as next month. Both phones are also rumored to be powered by Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 8 Gen 5 chipset – not the Elite Gen 5, but still significantly more powerful than the Snapdragon 7 Gen 4 housed within the Vivo S30.

The series is also expected to include Sony’s IMX882 primary sensor for enhanced low-light and detail capture. Outside of the camera system, we could see a second-gen 3D ultrasonic fingerprint scanner from Goodix for even quicker, more accurate unlocking.
The S50 series is reportedly taking a minimalist form design approach, with metal frames on both models. Vivo is said to be targeting online customers with these phones, just like it has done with the previous S-series models.
Display and Camera Upgrades
According to leaks the Vivo S50 may sport a 6.59-inch 1.5K display with a 120Hz refresh rate, which is slightly smaller than the S30’s 6.67-inch display. The Vivo S50 Pro Mini could shrink things down further with a 6.31-inch 1.5K AMOLED screen, again at 120Hz.
Camera changes seem more ambitious. The standard S50 might feature a periscope telephoto lens that works with a “flagship midsole contact image sensor,” suggesting it could offer better zoom and clarity performance.

Last year’s Vivo S30 for comparison packed a Snapdragon 7 Gen 4 SoC and included – like most other smartphones of its price range – triple rear camera setup with three 50MP sensors, along with a 50MP front camera as well, so the S50 series at least has a base to work from.
Final Thoughts
If these leaks turn out to be accurate, the Vivo S50 series is going to be a significant step up from its predecessors in the S30 lineup with a more powerful chipset, better camera and design improvements. The fact that Vivo is now relying upon a new Snapdragon platform and also providing it with a periscope zoom option, suggests that the company intends to push the S-series including the new X50 deeper into mid-premium space. With the official launch, which is possibly just weeks away, the next month should show how much of this early information proves accurate when it comes to real, live devices.
