Perplexity is changing the way its AI-powered Comet Assistant behaves inside the browser, and the shift is all about clarity and control. Users should always understand what Comet is doing, why it is doing it, and when their approval is required. In essence, Comet will now function less like an automated bot than as a helpful and transparent companion who hesitates before taking sensitive actions. Perplexity CEO Aravind Srinivas announced that the assistant will show its actions in real time, ask before taking over a task, and stop immediately when a login or purchase is involved. With Comet becoming one of Perplexity’s most widely used tools, the company is tightening safety and building trust before pushing toward deeper automation.
A Clearer View of Comet’s Actions
Perplexity has added a visual layer that lets users watch precisely what Comet is doing. The assistant now reveals:
- When it starts browsing
- What it clicks
- How it scrolls
- The steps it takes to produce an answer
A dedicated side panel shows its reasoning and actions as they unfold, making it much easier to track how the AI reaches its conclusions.

Users Decide When Comet Takes Control
The new design shifts power toward the user.
When you enter a query, Comet can offer to handle the task — but it won’t assume control unless you decide how it should behave. You can:
- Continue browsing manually
- Let Comet act once
- Give it ongoing permission for similar tasks
This approach keeps the assistant fast and useful while ensuring the user stays in charge of every interaction.
Stronger Safeguards for Risky Actions
Perplexity has added guardrails for moments that require human judgment. If Comet reaches a step involving logging in, entering credentials, or attempting a transaction, it will stop and ask before doing anything. Srinivas says the goal is for Comet to act like a responsible human assistant — one who knows when something is too sensitive to complete on their own.

Part of a Bigger Vision for Trusted AI
These updates form part of Perplexity's larger strategy for safer, more dependable assistants across its platform, from Deep Research through Labs and Background Assistants. Users no longer need to wonder what artificial intelligence (AI) can accomplish; instead they should decide their goals with full understanding and consent at each step.
Final Thoughts
Perplexity's latest update positions Comet as a more transparent and trustworthy browser assistant. By showing its actions, asking before taking over, and pausing during sensitive moments, the system becomes easier to trust without feeling intrusive. As Perplexity expands its ecosystem of AI helpers, this emphasis on visibility and user control provides the framework for assistants that act autonomously - but only when needed by you!
