Google Maps is the go-to navigation app for millions, relied on daily for live traffic updates and accurate routes. But if your car doesn’t have built-in navigation, you’ve probably noticed how quickly the app drains your phone’s battery.
That might soon change. According to a report from Android Authority, Google is working on a new power-saving mode for Maps. Code found in recent builds of the app hints that this feature could arrive in upcoming updates.

So, how would it work? The mode is expected to cut back on visual details and reduce graphics quality, focusing instead on turn-by-turn navigation to preserve power. There’s even talk of a one-touch toggle and a potential monochrome interface for extra efficiency.
Some might argue that plugging your phone in while driving makes this unnecessary. But for those on the move without a charger handy—or anyone trying to stretch battery life a bit longer—this could be a welcome addition. Even saving an hour of battery could make a real difference during long trips.
Google hasn’t shared when the feature might roll out or if it’s being tested publicly yet. But if the early findings are accurate, the power-saving tool could soon join Maps’ growing list of smart features.
Meanwhile, in India, Google Maps continues to face competition from local players like MapMyIndia’s Mappls, especially as the government pushes for the use of homegrown alternatives—including messaging apps like Zoho’s Arattai.
For now, we’ll have to wait and see when Google officially confirms this new feature, but it’s one that could make life easier for frequent travellers and commuters alike.
