Google Meet is the tech giant's popular video-calling platform renowned for its intuitive UI and seamless integration across other Google apps. While the platform offers a range of functionalities to connect with remote members in hybrid meetings, with the new 'companion mode', everyone can gain access to the interactive controls and features on smartphones (Android and iOS).
For the unaware, the functionality was already available for users on the desktop. The new companion mode on mobiles can be useful when using a laptop or desktop is not feasible. This feature on handsets can also prove a quick way to participate in meetings and town halls. According to Google, participants can "check in to the room to be identified by name" using companion mode.
Members can share an emoji (without interference to the speaker), raise their virtual hand to indicate that they wish to speak, switch on captions to view subtitles live, send chat messages to other participants and "view and zoom in on presented content" to follow what the presenter is saying. The company noted in its Workspace Updates posts that "there is no admin control" for companion mode. It will be available by default.

"You can join a meeting using companion mode from the green room before your meeting," Google said. Plus, the mic will be muted, and users are advised to use "meeting room hardware for audio and video to avoid feedback," the tech giant noted. The gradual rollout of the feature is now live. Minimum app build requirements are Meet - 229 and Gmail - 2024.01.28 on Android and Meet - 225.0 and Gmail - 6.0.231231 on iOS.
