Google has been focused on improving user safety and privacy. Google just announced the Safe Browsing update for Google Chrome users, which features real-time, privacy-preserving URL protection and improved pass safeguards for Chrome on iOS. This allows the browser to display real-time notifications about phishing, malware, and unwanted software. The new version attempts to protect users' security by constantly updating a list of known harmful sites in real-time. The organisation will now be able to avoid 25% of phishing attempts.

Safe browsing was always reliant on a locally stored list that was updated every 30 to 60 minutes until the tech giant discovered that malicious websites were active for less than 10 minutes. The new real-time protection now uses encryption and other privacy-enhancing techniques to protect user privacy while they browse.

How It Works

Chrome first verifies the website's security using its cache. Chrome constantly scans the website for versions that have been cached. This is a condensed explanation of the procedure. Chrome then sends the encrypted URL to a privacy server, where it is encrypted and obfuscated, prior to sending it to the Safe Browsing server. Moreover, the privacy server eliminates any possibility of user identification. Safe Browsing decrypts the data, compares it to its database, and notifies the user when a match is discovered.

Data Privacy:

To run the privacy server and prevent Google from obtaining users' IP addresses when verifying URLs, Google has partnered with Fastly. Before the data leaves the device, Chrome encrypts it; only Safe Browsing may decrypt it.

Google Chrome Speed:

The most recent version of Chrome caches known-safe URLs and adds fallback mechanisms for slow searches to guarantee a speedy procedure. Real-time Safe Browsing is enabled by default on Chrome and iOS; support for Android is planned for the future.
