Google is revamping the shopping experience across Search and the Gemini app, introducing a new wave of AI-driven features designed to make product discovery and purchases feel more natural, intuitive and automated. These updates begin rolling out today for users in the United States and mark one of Google’s biggest pushes yet toward conversational commerce.
A More Natural Way to Shop
At the centre of the update is the upgraded AI Mode in Google Search. It now blends Gemini models with the Shopping Graph, allowing users to shop using everyday language instead of juggling keywords, filters or category menus. During a press briefing, Vidhya Srinivasan, Google’s VP and GM of Ads & Commerce, noted that shoppers using AI Mode are asking questions that are 23 times longer than typical search queries—showing how quickly people are adapting to a more conversational format.

Google tailors the experience based on what you ask. Visual questions pull up shoppable image grids, while comparison-based queries surface neatly structured tables that highlight specs, ingredients, textures, reviewer insights and more. Behind the scenes, the system pulls from over 50 billion product listings—two billion of which are updated every hour.
Gemini App Levels Up
The Gemini app is also stepping into shopping, giving users a bridge between brainstorming and browsing. You can ask for product ideas within a specific budget and instantly see real listings, comparison charts and places to buy. This experience is limited to U.S. users aged 18+ with consumer accounts.

Automated Checkout With Agentic Tools
Google’s new agentic checkout adds automation to price tracking. You can set detailed rules for a product you want, and Google will monitor pricing, alert you when it drops, and—if the retailer supports it—complete the purchase on your behalf using Google Pay once you approve the details. Early partners include Wayfair, Chewy, Quince and select Shopify merchants.

AI That Calls Local Stores For You
Another standout feature is AI-powered local business calling. When you search for products “near me”, you may see a “Let Google call” option. Google’s system then contacts nearby stores to check availability and pricing and sends you a summary. Powered by an upgraded Duplex + Gemini setup, it’s designed to minimise unnecessary calls while getting accurate information.

Why It Matters
These updates shift more shopping decisions into Google’s ecosystem. Clean product feeds, accurate pricing and strong Google Pay readiness will matter more for retailers. Local businesses with reliable inventory data may see more store visits.
For now, the features remain U.S.-only, with global availability expected later.
