Google has now fully implemented “Preferred Sources” in Search for users from the US and India. Selected news outlets can now be featured more predominantly and tailored to users’ preferences. The feature has been announced and will be implemented to everyone in the upcoming days.

Google hopes this change will give users more control and customization over the data displayed in their searches, particularly regarding news. They want a more relevant news search experience while providing users with more personalized news sources they trust or prefer.

How Preferred Sources Works

  • Accessing the feature: In the Top stories section of Google Search, click the icon to the right of the title.
  • Selecting sources: Search for and add your preferred news outlets.
  • Instant results: Refresh your search to see more stories from your chosen publishers.

Your selections will be saved for future searches, and Google will display them in both Top stories and a new From your sources section.

What Changes and What Stays the Same

  • More from your favourites: Stories from your selected outlets will appear more frequently and prominently.
  • Still diverse results: You’ll continue to see articles from other publishers — the feature simply prioritises your chosen ones.
  • Unlimited selections: Choose as many sources as you like and change them anytime.

Conclusion

Through Preferred Sources, it seems that Google has landed on a happy medium between personalisation and flexibility by letting the user determine some of the content types in the feed. Now they are going to quickly and efficiently find more reliable content if they are following certain sources more closely.
