Google is steadily opening up access to its latest AI-powered search engine, which would be a first for the tech giant. This new AI Mode uses AI-generated responses to respond to a user's queries; interestingly, the information is sourced from Google's own search index.

For now only a small percentage of users in the US can test this out outside of Google's Labs sandbox in the coming few weeks, as was announced by the company in a blog post on Thursday, May 1.

“Based on the incredibly positive feedback we’re getting, we’re removing the waitlist so anyone in the U.S. can now get immediate access to AI Mode in Labs — and we’re adding new features to help you get things done,” Google stated.

As we are already witnessing a rise in the number of companies coming out with their own AI chatbots, and the race is gaining more momentum as every day passes by, this new 'AI Mode' seems like Google is trying to fight back. In recent times we have seen AI suits like Perplexity and ChatGPT gain a lot of popularity, and there are already reports that Perplexity might soon sign a deal with Samsung to be its default chatbot, something Motorola has already given a green light to.

These new players pose a threat to Google's dominance in the search market, a segment where Google has almost had a monopoly. This is also a crucial time for the tech giant, as it is currently under the scanner by the authorities with regards to some antitrust cases against it; this is something that could reshape the whole search empire that Google has built.

AI Mode: What Is It?

You are aware of how normal search engines function; you get links to websites, videos, or pictures for something you search for. The new AI Mode will respond to your queries with an AI-generated response with information that is within the Google search index.

AI Mode is distinct from AI Overviews in Google Search, as the latter offers an AI-generated summary of information. AI Overviews appear between the search bar and URL results.

On Thursday, Google introduced new features to AI Mode. Users will now have a left-side panel that shows their past search topics, making it easier to revisit earlier queries and ask follow-up questions.

“Just click the new left-side panel to get to your past searches — each topic will include the info that AI Mode already found for you, and you can ask follow-up questions or take your next steps,” Google said.

In the coming weeks we might also see the tech giant come out with visual place and product cards integrated with the AI-Mode. Users will be able to tap on these elements and get more information about stores, hotels, restaurants, etc. These cards will provide information like reviews, promotional details, etc.

“For example, if you’re looking for the best vintage shops for mid-century modern furniture, AI Mode will show local stores along with helpful insights like live busyness, and you can easily call or get directions,” Google said.

Users who have access will be able to see a dedicated tab for AI search located at the top, alongside other things like Images, Videos, News, Shopping, etc., that you have seen before already.
