Google wants to change the way people shop online by making shopping decisions feel as natural and easy as consulting a friend for advice. The company wants purchasing decisions to feel just like talking with friends. To push that vision forward, Google is rolling out new AI-powered shopping tools across Search and the Gemini app in the U.S. These updates blend conversational AI with Google’s massive product database, making it easier to jump from a simple question to an informed purchase — all without switching apps or hunting through menus.
Search Gets a Smarter, More Conversational Shopping Mode
Google has upgraded AI Mode in Search by combining its Gemini models with the Shopping Graph — a database of more than 50 billion products that refreshes itself every hour. The result is an experience that feels more like chatting with an assistant than running a search query.
Users can now ask more natural, longer questions to their phones' callers about running shoes under $120 that meet their specific requirements, for instance "I need cushioned running shoes for flat feet under $120 - what are my options?"
How Google responds now
- If you ask something visual, the system shows a grid of shoppable images.
- If you want comparisons, it builds neatly organised lists that break down specs, materials, textures, and even reviewer insights.
The entire flow is designed to guide you from broad curiosity to a specific pick without bouncing between pages.
Gemini Turns Into a Personal Shopping Planner
Google is also giving the Gemini app deeper shopping abilities. You can ask it to plan around a theme or budget — “Help me find a birthday gift for under $50,” or “Show me options for setting up a small home office.”
Gemini presents suggestions, comparison breakdowns, and purchase links in one location, so as to keep research, filtering, and decision-making within one conversation.
At present, this feature is being deployed only to U.S. users 18 or over who use personal Google accounts.
The Bigger Picture
Google clearly sees shopping as one of the strongest use cases for AI. By blending Search, Gemini, and the Shopping Graph, it’s trying to close the gap between a question and a purchase. Whether you’re just exploring or ready to check out, the system adapts to your intent — and turns what used to be a scattered process into a smooth conversation.
