It seems that Meta is in the final stages of developing an Instagram app for the iPad that has been in the works for quite some time, with internal testing already taking place. As noted by Mark Gurman from Bloomberg, the social media company is looking to launch a refined version of Instagram for iPad users by the end of this year. Previously, iPad users had to make do with the enlarged version of the iPhone application, which did not take advantage of the iPad’s larger display and multitasking capabilities.
The Reasons for the Delay of Instagram on iPad
According to Gurman, the reason for not building an iPad-specific version of Instagram was due to:
- Problems with image scaling and layout design for square posts.
- The use of low-quality content HD cameras on high-resolution tablet screens.
- An obsolete technology stack.
Nonetheless, it seems that the company is more confident about recent updates to their backend infrastructure and development tools, enabling the possibility of a dedicated iPad version without compromising graphics quality.

What to anticipate from the iPad version
Meta still has no release date, but the upcoming app is likely to feature the following:
- An optimized design for iPad displays
- Support for landscape orientation with Split View multitasking
- Enhanced media viewing for photos and videos
- Possibly some exclusive high resolution, widescreen features
All these improvements may make Instagram more functional and visually appealing on larger screens considering current video consumption trends and content creation.
Strategic Timing and Market Factors
The development's timing is crucial:
- Meta has recently announced WhatsApp for iPad, indicating a shift towards tablets.
- TikTok already has a dedicated iPad app which adds competitive pressure.
- Political scrutiny and trade tensions could be forcing Meta to solidify their ecosystem against foreign controlled rivals.
Due to the ever-increasing consumption of short form videos and high resolution visuals, Instagram’s unavailability on iPads has become more apparent. Meta could reclaim this gap by launching it now.

Although there have been clues, nothing has been officially released and the launch window for the public is predicted for sometime before the end of 2025. If properly implemented, Millions of users around the globe will have a streamlined experience with their iPads.
