With TikTok’s uncertain future in the U.S., Instagram has seized the opportunity to introduce a brand-new app to the scene. Adam Mosseri, head of Instagram, announced that a new, free video-editing app called Edits is on its way. The app, geared toward phone video creators, promises an extensive range of tools to enhance your video-editing experience. From improved recording quality to shareable drafts, Edits will also feature trending audio, performance insights for Reels, and an “inspiration tab” to spark creativity, alongside the usual editing capabilities.
If Edits sounds similar to CapCut, TikTok’s video editing companion, you’re not alone in making that comparison. And while some may question the timing of this release, Mosseri assured that Edits has been in development for several months, reinforcing the notion that good apps take time. The app aims to go beyond just templates or AI-powered editing, offering a platform for users to track and develop their creative ideas.
Although Edits isn’t officially available yet, iOS users can already pre-order it through the App Store, with an Android version in the works as well. While Mosseri teased a release in February, the App Store currently lists March 13 as the expected launch date. Keep in mind that the initial version will likely be a work in progress, so it may not be fully polished right out of the gate.
In addition to the app announcement, Mosseri also shared a few exciting updates for Instagram users. A new feed will soon showcase Reels that your friends have liked or commented on. Reels themselves are getting a boost, now stretching up to three minutes in length. And Instagram is making a notable change to profile layouts, bidding farewell to the classic square grid in favor of a rectangular format.
