On social media, Meta has gone one step further to break down linguistic barriers. One of the changes that the company will implement is the widening of its AI-based Reels translation feature, which was initially developed for English and Spanish only. This was announced by Mark Zuckerberg on his Instagram. The company said the extension of its service to languages such as Hindi and Portuguese would mean that the number of users on Instagram and Facebook who would be able to read or watch texts/videos in languages other than their own would increase exponentially.

Along with a demonstration video, the head of Instagram, Adam Mosseri, showed how Meta’s AI could do a live translation and dubbing of Reels. Mosseri’s voice, which the AI seamlessly recreated, was going through Hindi, Spanish, and Portuguese as if they were one language. The machine translations were intelligible, and they even retained the original speakers’ style, feelings, and pace. The gadget neither just translates nor even copies the voice of the artist and, furthermore, gives an optional lip-sync feature to make sure that the dubbed videos are not only authentic but also engaging.
Those who meet the requirements—basically, creators with publicly visible accounts or more than 1,000 followers in regions where the function is accessible—can make use of the tool during their Reel upload. A “Translate your voice with Meta AI” option shows up during the uploading process. Selecting the target language and previewing the AI dubbing can be done by the creators, and from there, they can finish directly by publishing it.
By branding every translated video with “Translated with Meta AI”, Meta maintains transparency with its users. Viewers who want the original audio can revert back at any time by the following path: three-dot icon > Audio and Language > Do not translate.
As well as this capability, there is a novel social and location-driven interactive map in India that Instagram has just unveiled. Users can now not only put on display posts, Stories and Reels for the area they are in or that has been tagged, but they can also use the Map to share and explore the content. It comes with features that focus on giving users complete control of their privacy, such as selective location sharing, parents’ control over teenagers’ usage, and very clear visibility indicators. Content on the map is still viewable for 24 hours, encouraging real-time discovery while maintaining user control over visibility and data.
