iOS 26 Beta: Apple has opened the doors for iPhone customers to try its next-generation major software update with the public beta launch of iOS 26. This pre-release preview allows consumers to access some of the biggest changes Apple has implemented in years—from a radical visual redesign to more intelligent AI-powered features under the new Apple Intelligence banner.

Who Can Test iOS 26?

The public beta is now open to anyone signed up for Apple's Beta Software Program. If you have an iPhone 11 or later—including the SE (2nd generation or later)—you qualify. The beta installation process involves signing in via Apple's beta portal, activating beta updates in your iPhone settings, and downloading the update via the regular Software Update menu.

Backups First, Always

As this is currently a beta version, bugs and performance problems are possible. Apple suggests that users back up devices using iCloud or a Mac prior to installing. A proper backup will allow you to revert in case anything goes amiss.

A Brand-New Look: Liquid Glass

The largest visual overhaul in iOS 26 is the addition of Liquid Glass, a system-wide design language. It introduces smooth translucent effects throughout the interface, influencing app icons, lock screen items, menus, and animations. The whole OS feels and appears more fluid and contemporary.

Smarter Features With Apple Intelligence

  • iOS 26 further integrates on-device AI on Apple's part. Features include:
  • Live Translation in Messages, FaceTime, and the Phone App
  • Visual Intelligence, where you're able to ask based on what's on your display
  • Smarter Shortcuts, with personalised app recommendations and task automations

These are conceived to make the system better understand your needs, without compromising Apple's privacy-first position.

Upgrades to Core Apps

Phone App: New features such as Call Screening and Hold Assist assist in managing interruptions.

Messages: You can now make polls in group conversations, choose custom backgrounds, and send Apple Cash straight in conversation. Group conversations also receive typing indicators and enhanced spam blocking.

Apple Music: Includes lyrics translation and seamless AutoMix transitions between songs.

Maps: More private with a visited locations log and enhanced turn-by-turn directions.

Wallet: Now includes installment payments and updated boarding passes.

Games: A new app serves as a central hub for game activity, scores, and achievements.

CarPlay: Gets new widgets, live activities, and pinned conversations support.

Final Version Coming in September

Though the beta has been out since now, Apple will formally release the stable version of iOS 26 in September of 2025, probably when they introduce the iPhone 17 series. In the meantime, users who want to try new technology can try out the beta and assist in the shaping of the final product through feedback.
