iPhone 17: We might witness the launch of Apple's latest lineup of iPhones, the iPhone 17 series, in a few upcoming months, and it is one of the most anticipated smartphone launches that is expected to take place this year. We have already seen the new software upgrades that Apple has introduced across its devices with iOS 16 and iPadOS 16 stealing the limelight at the WWDC event that took place a week ago.
But not all Apple devices will be getting the new update, as Apple has now announced the generation of iPhones which will be considered as "vintage". This time it's the iPhone XS that will be guillotined; the model was launched in 2018.

If you’re still holding on to your iPhone XS in 2025, this might finally be the nudge you needed to upgrade. Apple has officially classified the iPhone XS as a vintage product, joining the likes of the iPhone XR and iPhone XS Max — both of which launched alongside it back in 2018.
What Does ‘Vintage’ Actually Mean?
In Apple’s terminology, a “vintage” product is one that was discontinued more than five years ago. While it’s not obsolete yet, it does signal that full support is winding down. You’ll still be able to get it repaired at Apple Stores or through Apple Authorised Service Providers, but there's a catch — part replacements will depend entirely on whether those components are still available. So, if your device needs something more than a battery swap, the chances of a successful repair could be slim.
Software Support Ends with iOS 18
The iPhone XS received its last official update with iOS 18. Come September, it will no longer be eligible for iOS 26, meaning no new features, no enhanced security, and no AI-powered Siri updates. Apple is planning to roll out next year with iOS 26.4. For users who like to stay up to date with Apple’s latest software innovations, this is a major drawback.
Still Functional, But Falling Behind
Let’s be clear: your iPhone XS isn’t going to suddenly stop working. If it’s in good shape, it’ll still handle daily tasks like calling, messaging, and browsing the web without any trouble. But with no future software updates, the device will slowly become less compatible with newer apps and services — not to mention more vulnerable to security threats over time.
The Upgrade Moment
With the iPhone 17 series around the corner, now might be the ideal time to make the switch. Apple’s newest models are set to bring significant improvements in performance, battery life, and potentially even modular accessories with the rumoured iPhone 17 Air. If you’ve been putting off the decision, this is your sign.
Final Word
Being added to the vintage list doesn’t mean your iPhone XS is useless — far from it. But it does mean the clock is ticking. Whether it’s limited repair options or no access to upcoming iOS features, there are more and more reasons to consider moving on to something new.
