The Indian Railway Catering and Tourism Corporation (IRCTC), which manages online ticket booking and other railway services, alerted via an X (formerly called Twitter) post that users should stay vigilant against malicious links being circulated in the wild by fraudsters in an attempt to plant malicious attacks against citizens.

The Public Sector Undertaking (PSU) under the Ministry of Railways urged users to download the official app from the Google Play Store or Apple App Store and not click on links received from unknown sources to stay safe from fraudulent activities.

"Alert: It has been reported that a malicious and fake mobile app campaign is in circulation where some fraudsters are sending phishing links at a mass level and insisting users download fake 'IRCTC Rail Connect' mobile app to trick common citizens into fraudulent activities," IRCTC said in the post.

"People are advised not to fall prey of such fraudsters and use only IRCTC's official Rail Connect Mobile Apps from Google Play Store or Apple App Store, and call IRCTC Customer Care on official numbers published on IRCTC official website," it added.

These fake apps may steal the personal information of users which may include financial details used in transactions and data stored in the affected device.

IRCTC Rail Connect Fake App and Website: Previous Warnings

In a previous instance in April 2023, the PSU also issued a warning against the app (irctcconnect.apk) and website (https://irctc.creditmobile.site) that was spreading through WhatsApp, Telegram and other messaging platforms. In the communication, IRCTC also informed users that it would never ask for OTP, PIN, password, or banking details.

IRCTC Fraud: How To Be Safe?

- Only install apps from official Android or iOS stores

- Turn off the unknown apps installation feature for all apps from the settings

- Do not click on links that promise lucrative discounts on ticket booking

- Visit the official website for authentic information
