Thierry Breton, European Commissioner, has sent a warning to Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg, urging him to remove pro-Hamas content from Meta's platforms and emphasising the necessity of vigilance in this regard. According to Breton's warning, failing to do so could result in Meta breaking new European Union (EU) regulations.

Breton emphasised the necessity for the quick removal of hate speech and illegal terrorist information in his letter to Zuckerberg, particularly in light of the ongoing conflict in Israel. He noted that there has been an increase in the spread of false information and unlawful content across the EU, as noted by the European Commission.

Breton urged Zuckerberg and Meta to make sure their systems are successful in locating and eliminating such information. Additionally, he pushed for rapid responses to any inquiries from Europol and the pertinent law enforcement agencies.

Breton's letter demanded that Zuckerberg address the EU's worries right away and urged the CEO to do so within the next 24 hours. He emphasised the significance of abiding by the regulations outlined in the Digital Services Act (DSA), especially those about terms of service, timely and objective action following notices of illegal content in the EU, and the requirement for reasonable and efficient mitigating measures.

In response to these worries, a Meta spokeswoman indicated that the organisation had set up a special operations centre with specialists, including Hebrew and Arabic speakers, in the wake of the Hamas attacks on Israel. The business's staff are putting up a lot of effort to keep their platforms secure, to deal with content that breaks local laws or company regulations, and to engage with independent fact-checkers in the area to stop the spread of false information.

Recently, Commissioner Breton warned Elon Musk about his platform X, which was also charged with spreading false information and illegal content in the EU following the Hamas attacks. Musk responded by requesting that Breton publicly report the offensive content on X, claiming that the business is open and honest.
