EU Commissioner Thierry Breton has warned Elon Musk, CEO of Tesla and SpaceX, about the suspected involvement of his X platform in propagating unlawful content and disinformation within the European Union (EU). This warning comes in the aftermath of Hamas terrorist strikes against Israel.
Commissioner Breton underlined his worries that the X platform was being used for spreading unlawful content and misinformation in the EU in a letter to Musk. Breton referred to the EU Digital Services Act (DSA), which specifies the platform's requirements for content moderation, as a guideline.
Commissioner Breton emphasised the need for transparency and clarity on the types of content that are permitted by X's terms and asked the platform to consistently and zealously enforce its own rules. He stressed the seriousness of the situation, particularly in light of the platform's dissemination of violent and terrorist content.
Breton demanded a "prompt, accurate, and complete response" from Musk within the next 24 hours, stating that this response would be included in the EU's DSA compliance file on X.
Breton also stressed the need for X to implement reasonable and efficient mitigating mechanisms to deal with concerns about public safety and the propagation of misinformation, which he argues is a problem for public media and civil society organisations around the EU.

Musk's company, X, revealed on Tuesday that it had deleted tens of thousands of posts from the Israel-Hamas war that contained graphic images, violent statements, and other offensive content. X is run by Musk. Concerns regarding the deception that can be found on the site were brought up by a recent EU research.
Vera Jourova, the EU's Commissioner for Values and Transparency, sent X a direct message saying, "You have to abide by the hard law. We'll be keeping an eye on your actions."
