Meta, formerly known as Facebook on Tuesday announced the launch of the web version of its new text-first social media platform Threads. Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg said in a Threads post that the web version would reach users "over the next few days."
Now, all the Thread's users will be able to access the microblogging platform by logging in to its website from their computers, the Facebook and Instagram owner said. The web version also makes it easier for businesses and organizations to use Threads to connect with their customers and followers.
The company will be adding more functionality to the web experience in the coming weeks, Meta said. However, some features of the Threads mobile app won’t be available just yet.
The launch of Thread's web version is a bid by Zuckerberg to retain professional users and gain an edge over rival X, formerly Twitter.
Earlier, Threads and Instagram CEO Adam Mosseri had also confirmed that the web version of Threads is being tested internally. Replying to a comment on Threads, Mosseri noted, “We’re working on it! We’ve been using an early version internally for a week or two. Still needs some work before we can open it up to everyone though…"
Threads is a text-first social media app that was launched by Meta in July 2023. The app is designed to be a more intimate and personal way for users to connect with their friends and family. Threads allow users to share photos, videos, and text posts with a select group of people.
Threads, which crossed 100 million sign-ups for the app within five days of its launch on July 5, saw a decline in its popularity as users returned to the more familiar platform X after the initial rush.
In just over a month, daily active users on the Android version of the Threads app dropped to 10.3 million from the peak of 49.3 million, according to a report, dated August 10, by analytics platform Similarweb reported Reuters.
