Jio 5G in Siachin Glacier: Reliance Jio has successfully launched 5G services in the world's highest battlefield the Siachen Glacier, this marks a significant milestone not just for the telecom industry but for the Indian Army as well. This achievement was announced by the Indian Army’s 'Fire and Fury Corps' through a tweet, highlighting the joint effort between Jio and the Army to set up the first-ever 5G mobile tower at Siachen’s forward post.

A Groundbreaking Milestone

On the eve of Army Day, which falls on January 15, Jio’s 4G and 5G services went live in the Siachen Glacier, making Jio the first telecom operator to provide connectivity in this remote and hostile terrain. This remarkable accomplishment is not just about technology but also symbolizes a tribute to the brave soldiers who endure extreme conditions in the region.

 

It is not difficult to understand that the establishment of a mobile tower at a staggering height of 16,000 feet in the Karakoram Range is no easy task. One has to consider the glacier's harsh climate with temperatures dropping to -50°C. The region is known for its freezing temperatures, icy winds, and snowstorms. Despite these challenges, Jio has managed to install the tower, enabling mobile services at this high-altitude military post.

A Challenging Endeavor

The execution of this installation not only requires one to overcome technical challenges but also demands high-level planning which would ensure the security and safety of the personnel involved. The Indian Army ensured the safety of the crew and provided logistical support for this operation. Jio, on the other hand, used its indigenous full-stack 5G technology to make this possible.

Jio's team worked closely with the Army’s Fire and Fury Corps and Siachen warriors, who helped in setting up the tower at this northern glacier post. Together, they overcame the region's extreme weather challenges to deliver 5G connectivity in an area where few could imagine the possibility of reliable communication.
