If you’ve ever scanned a QR code at a shop and paused for a second wondering whether the money was actually going to the right person, this new UPI change is meant for you.

Starting June 1, users making payments through UPI QR codes will now see the real bank account holder’s name before completing the transaction. Earlier, many payment apps often displayed only the shop name, merchant ID or QR label, which sometimes made it difficult to confirm who was actually receiving the money.

The move comes at a time when fake QR code scams and payment fraud cases have become increasingly common across India. Fraudsters have often taken advantage of confusing merchant names or copied QR codes to trick people into sending money to the wrong account. With this new verification layer, customers will now get a clearer idea of where their money is going before they hit the pay button.

For regular users, this could make everyday digital payments feel a lot safer and more transparent. Whether it’s paying at a local grocery store, a roadside food stall or a large retail outlet, users can now double-check the account name and avoid accidental transfers or suspicious transactions.

But while customers are likely to welcome the change, some traders and businesses may run into a small problem. Many shops use bank accounts registered under personal names or names different from the actual business branding. So if a customer scans a QR code at a store called “Sharma Electronics” but sees a completely different personal name on screen, it could create hesitation or confusion during payment.

That means several merchants may now need to update or better align their banking details with their business identity to maintain trust with customers.

The update may look small on the surface, but it changes one important thing about UPI payments: users now get more visibility before the money leaves their account. And in a country where QR payments have become part of daily life, even a small trust signal like this can make a big difference.
