Meta's AI image labels faced a backlash recently for marking real images captured and edited by photographers as 'Made with AI'. As a reaction to these concerns, the company is now changing it to 'AI info' across its apps. Earlier this year, the company announced the labelling approach for images, which relies on "industry standard indicators" which may be included in an image by AI service providers, according to Meta.
Meta also admitted that some images that could have been modified using AI (including retouching tools) and industry standard indicators were marked as 'Made with AI'. However, this label will change to 'AI Info' across apps which users can click to know more information about.
"While we work with companies across the industry to improve the process so our labeling approach better matches our intent, we're updating the 'Made with AI' label to 'AI info' across our apps, which people can click for more information," Meta said. The platform also noted the previous labels did not provide "enough context" to users and "weren't always aligned with people's expectations".

For context, the company first started labeling AI-generated content in May this year. The technology assessed the media based on the C2PA and IPTC metadata standards. 'AI Info' may "encompass content that was made and/or modified with AI so the hope is that this is more in line with people's expectations," a Meta spokesperson told TechCrunch.

However, the label will not tell users about the level of AI used to create AI-generated content. Adobe apps apply metadata to images that use AI tools (Generative AI Fill and more) while editing. This could have ended up being a problem for the affected photos on Instagram, Facebook and Threads. The new label will roll out across smartphones and the web experience of Meta apps.
