Meta has announced it will be retiring the standalone Messenger desktop apps for Mac and Windows as of December 15, 2025. When that happens, users will no longer be able to log in and access the app, instead being redirected to Facebook’s website (in a more aggressive move we’ve seen on Android) for sending and receiving messages.
Messenger Desktop App to Be Discontinued
According to a support page, “The Messenger app for Mac is being deprecated. After deprecation, you won’t be able to log into this app and will be automatically redirected to use the Facebook website for messaging.”
Though Meta was initially only talking about its Mac app, TechCrunch confirmed with Meta that they would also be discontinuing Windows support.
If you currently use Messenger on desktop, Meta will soon send an in-app message alerting you of its imminent deprecation process. After 60 days have passed since that announcement, users should keep using it until it stops functioning altogether and Meta suggests removing it from their phones as it no longer functions.
What Happens to Your Chat History
For most users, the biggest worry is message history. The positive news is your chats won’t disappear if you activate secure storage before the app stops working. This will save all the encrypted messages and provide access to them when you start using WhatsApp on the web.

How to check if secure storage is on:
1. Open Messenger and click Settings (above your profile picture).
2. Go to Privacy & Safety > End-to-end encrypted chats.
3. Select Message storage and make sure Turn on secure storage is enabled.
4. Set a PIN to protect your chat history.
For Users Without a Facebook Account
Even if you have Messenger and don’t have a Facebook account, your butt is covered. You can keep chatting by logging into Messenger.” com, no Facebook account required.
In other words: Meta is finally killing off the Messenger desktop apps for Windows and Mac by Dec. 15, driving folks to the Facebook site or Messenger. com. Just be sure that secure storage is enabled before then to protect your chats.
