As the race for AI talent heats up, public accolades among the leading figures in artificial intelligence are hard to come by. Recently, comments from Microsoft’s head of AI Mustafa Suleyman, have been glowing. Speaking to Bloomberg, Suleyman openly gushed about some of the leading figures in AI – OpenAI chief Sam Altman, Google DeepMind head Demis Hassabis and xAI founder Elon Musk. Even as he leads Microsoft’s AI work in a highly competitive field, Suleyman says he stays in touch with these leaders regularly. His comments provide a rare window into how personal respect and professional rivalry coincide at the apex of the worldwide AI race.
Suleyman on Sam Altman and OpenAI’s Ambition
Discussing OpenAI CEO Sam Altman, Suleyman noted his ambition and desire to take big gambles. He called Altman “courageous”, referring to OpenAI’s aggressive build-out of massive data centres needed to support products like ChatGPT.
Suleyman said he believed Altman’s style could set the tone for the next age of tech entrepreneurship. He added that Altman could turn out to be one of the great entrepreneurs of this era, describing the speed at which OpenAI has been erecting infrastructure as incredible. While some critics have pointed out the gulf between what OpenAI is spending and its current revenue, Suleyman said he remained optimistic that if done right, it was a potentially successful strategy in the end.
Continued Respect for Demis Hassabis and DeepMind
Suleyman had equally kind words for Demis Hassabis, his ex-colleague and cofounder at DeepMind. Describing him as an extraordinary scientist and thinker, Suleyman said Hassabis is the kind of polymath you encounter once in a generation – someone who has successfully made several significant, breakthrough contributions to the field of artificial intelligence.
Now leading rival AI organisations, Suleyman said their personal relationship is still strong. He revealed that he had most recently extended congratulations to Hassabis on the major achievements from DeepMind in Nano Banana, Gemini 3 and AlphaFold – reinforcing that it's a mutual respect among the leaders.
Suleyman’s View on Elon Musk and xAI
When it comes to Elon Musk, Suleyman had a colourful description: “bulldozer”. He said Musk’s strength lay in his ability to bulldoze through barriers and make ideas happen even though they frequently appear crazy at first.
While Suleyman appreciates Musk’s blunt and totally unfiltered style, he did say that Musk has a different value system and prefers to live in a way nobody ever believed was possible. He pointed to Musk’s record across distinct industries, including space, electric cars and A.I., as testimony to his rare ability not only to bend reality through sheer force of will but also to advocate for the long term.

Rivalry Without Isolation in the AI Industry
Leaders of competing companies that they now run, though these two firms compete in some areas, Suleyman’s comments suggest that there may be more to the AI industry at the very top than zero-sum rivalry. Common values, along with mutual respect and acknowledgement of each other’s accomplishments, still matter today, as companies compete to be the best in AI infrastructure, models and applications.
Final Thoughts
Mustafa Suleyman’s comments provide a rare window of openness into an industry that has been dominated by secrecy and competition. By lauding Sam Altman’s ambition, Demis Hassabis’s scientific brilliance and Elon Musk’s relentless drive, Suleyman adds some humanity to the race for AI. While competition intensifies, these remarks demonstrate that respect, dialogue and credit are still at play among those driving the future of AI.
