MICROSOFT released Windows 11 for users on October 5, 2021. From this day, free upgrades to the new operating system started to roll out in supported devices. And latest reports suggest that it also delivered update prompts to unsupported hardware.

The tech giant has reportedly offered Windows 11 upgrades to PC that don't meet the current eligibility requirements. This came to light when a Twitter user(@PhantomOfEarth) shared screenshots of an unsupported system receiving a set of pop-up messages and notifications concerning the update.

"Windows 11 free upgrade being offered to unsupported Windows 10 devices/VMs? Screenshots from a Windows 10 22H2 VM that does not meet the Windows 11 system requirements, big ones being TPM (none) and RAM (2 GB)", the user wrote on Twitter. However, when the user attempted to install the update, it failed.

Microsoft, in the "Known Issues" section of its website, also shared details about the issue. The company wrote, "Some hardware ineligible Windows 10 and Windows 11, version 21H2 devices were offered an inaccurate upgrade to Windows 11. These ineligible devices did not meet the minimum requirements to run Windows 11. Devices that experienced this issue were not able to complete the upgrade installation process."

This issue was first detected on February 23 and was resolved on the same day. It take "24 to 48 hours" for the issue to resolve in the affected machines. The affected platforms were Windows 10 (version 22H2, 21H2, 20H2) and Windows 11 (version 21H2), according to Microsoft.

Microsoft is expected to deliver new improvements in Windows 11 with its upcoming update. Full search box in the taskbar, improved search in Start menu, an optimised taskbar for tablets and a redesigned system tray are among the improvements Microsoft aims to bring to Windows 11, according to a report by The Verge.

The system requirements include a 1 GHz or faster compatible 64-bit processor with a minimum of two cores. Minimum 4GB RAM on the system and 64 GB storage. The PC should be UEFI, Secure Boot capable and have TPM 2.0. For more specific details you may refer to the system requirements on the manufacturer's website.
