Samsung recently introduced the Bespoke AI appliances ecosystem in India at 'The Brief' that took place in Gurugram. Jagran Hi-Tech was able to get a first-hand look at the experience that Samsung is going to bring to the country. The company's philosophy here is simple: it wants to connect appliances in various categories with Artificial Intelligence, be it climate control, laundry, living room, or kitchen, which is also capable of learning new things, optimising energy consumption and automating various tasks through the SmartThings platform.

Samsung's Market Consolidation: Its Position And Cross-Platform Compatibility

We were also able to get in touch with Ghufran Alam, Vice President, Digital Appliances Business, Samsung India and were able to get some deeper insights into how Samsung is consolidating its position here and whether the connectivity that Samsung wants to provide is capable of going just beyond Samsung devices.

So firstly, I asked that at IFA Berlin, we saw competitors such as Xiaomi come out with a similar car, home and ecosystem proposition. How does Samsung plan to stand apart from that? Can we also expect automobile integration from Samsung in the future?

To which Ghufran Alam replied, "Samsung has a very unique proposition for consumers that encompasses products across consumer electronics and consumer devices. This ranges from mobile phones to air conditioners and other products. What we provide is a device ecosystem where the different products can talk to each other. This comes from insights into Indian consumers. It is not about introducing something new just for the sake of it. Meaningful innovation comes from understanding consumers, and that is backed by our R&D centre in Bengaluru"

Adding further, "We are very confident about the strength of our ecosystem and the way consumers are adopting Samsung products. We have also been at the forefront of AI adoption across our devices. The more experience you have with AI, the more refined it becomes because it continues learning from different use cases. In that sense, we are confident that consumers will appreciate the ecosystem and the different ways it can make everyday tasks easier. For example, I mentioned how an AC can work with a smartwatch, as well as different use cases involving refrigerators. There are several such applications designed around everyday consumer needs."

Another thing that comes to a common consumer's mind is whether these products will be compatible across various non-Samsung products or not, to this, Ghufran Alam, Vice President, Digital Appliances Business, Samsung India, replied, "Yes, there are compatibility options available. For specific products, we can provide more details as well."

Adding further on how the Indian consumer's daily usage is, he said, "For example, we have talked about smart ceiling fans. Normally, Indian consumers use an AC along with a ceiling fan, with around 50 to 60 per cent of people using both together. We have compatibility with certain types of ceiling fans that are outside the Samsung ecosystem, and we are making sure that these devices can communicate with each other. When an AC and ceiling fan are being used together, the idea is to optimise energy consumption and temperature. So yes, we are compatible with a lot of products outside the Samsung ecosystem as well."

Family Hub Refrigerator First Impressions

The Family Hub Refrigerator was one of the products headlining the showcase, which we got to experience firsthand. The device comes with built-in AI Vision in collaboration with Google Gemini and AI Food Manager, which was capable of recognising food items which were inside the refrigerator.

In our first impressions of Samsung’s Bespoke AI refrigerator, we tested how the AI-connected system handles everyday tasks. It can recognise items inside, provide general information such as expiry details, and keep track of when products are put in and taken out. Although the device does not automatically recognise if the product inside is expiring, it gives a general description based on when the product was put inside the refrigerator and how long it is safe to keep it there.

You can also select multiple items to get recipe suggestions, with the option to find related cooking videos on YouTube.

The system can go beyond the refrigerator too. It can show things such as how long you walked your pet, although this depends on information from connected IoT devices. Similar information about people at home can also be accessed through the Smart Hub.

Other Appliances in the Ecosystem

There were other products as well within the ecosystem that were showcased, including Samsung’s WindFree ACs, Bespoke AI refrigerators and Bespoke AI Laundry Combo.

The WindFree ACs feature AI Energy Mode for quieter, more efficient cooling, while Wearable Good Sleep uses Galaxy Wearables to adjust settings based on sleep patterns. The refrigerator adds features such as Energy Saving, Power Cool/Freeze and flexible storage, along with monitoring options through SmartThings.

The Bespoke AI Laundry Combo uses AI Wash & Dry to adjust cycles based on fabric types, with a dedicated Pet Care cycle and Smart Forward updates. SmartThings Home Care also allows users to monitor appliances and manage them remotely.

So with these products and AI integration, Samsung wishes to take the next step towards smart homes in the country. With an ecosystem that does not just function on command but learns effectively as it assimilates itself into people's daily lives. Bespoke AI is Samsung's answer to making the ecosystem more efficient.
