Mobile World Congress, Nokia: At MWC in Barcelona, Nokia CEO Pekka Lundmark carefully avoided questions about the U.S. government acquiring a stake in the company, while emphasizing the importance of cooperation between the U.S. and EuropeThe Mobile World Congress, the world's largest mobile technology tradeshow started this week and is currently in full swing. We have heard many new announcements and concept ideas that companies are bringing to the table this time with tri-folding phones and solar charging as well. Although trade tensions have been ignited by the latest wave of American tariffs on Chinese goods.
At Nokia's pre-show press conference, outgoing CEO Pekka Lundmark carefully navigated the sensitive issue of the growing geopolitical tensions ignited by Donald Trump 2.0. According to a report by Fierce Network, when asked about a question that seemed to be on everyone’s mind—whether Nokia had engaged in talks with the US government regarding the possibility of the Donald Trump administration acquiring a stake in the company—Lundmark responded, "We're obviously not commenting." He continued, "Let me just say that we collaborate with governments, including the U.S. government, and our presence in the U.S. is incredibly significant to us—though Europe remains equally vital."
Lundmark went on to say, "We would hope for cooperation between Europe and the United States, as it truly benefits everyone involved. But if that doesn't materialize, we'll need to address both markets independently." He further emphasized, "We are proud to be headquartered in Europe, but the U.S. is our second home."
Discussing the ongoing tariff war, Lundmark noted, "Obviously a global tariff war would not be to anyone's benefit," adding, "Nobody really knows what's going to happen" in terms of trade.
