OpenAI Co-Founder John Schulman Departs To Join Rival Company Anthropic

One of the co-founders of OpenAI, John Schulman, announced his departure from the ChatGPT maker in a late-night post on the social networking site X. He is now working for rival Anthropic.

"This choice stems from my desire to deepen my focus on AI alignment, and to start a new chapter of my career where I can return to hands-on technical work," Schulman wrote on X.

Greg Brockman, the president and co-founder of OpenAI, announced late on Monday that he will be taking a leave of absence through the end of the year in an X post.

The Information broke the story first, including mentioning the departure of Peter Deng, a product manager who joined OpenAI last year.

The decision was made in light of the substantial staff changes OpenAI is experiencing, including the July reassignment of AI safety chief Aleksander Madry to a new position.

Ilya Sutskever, another co-founder and head scientist of OpenAI, departed the business in May. One of the founding founders of the AI company, Andrej Karpathy, quit OpenAI in February and launched an AI-enhanced learning platform in July.

In the meantime, Elon Musk, the CEO of Tesla and a co-founder of OpenAI who departed the company three years later, reopened his lawsuit against CEO Sam Altman on Monday, claiming that the business prioritised profits and business interests over the general welfare.

On the other hand, the ChatGPT-maker has also reportedly developed a new tool, which will let the users know if the written text is AI-generated. Not only that, the company may also offer watermarking the text. However, the company has yet to announce the feature and is currently working on it.
