OpenAI introduces ChatGPT Pulse, an interactive interface that represents the chatbot’s first foray into proactive AI assistance. Where the traditional model of exchange was reactive — users would prompt and ChatGPT would respond to their requests — Pulse turns this on its head, serving up daily personalised updates without requiring an input at all. Now, it’s offered to Pro subscribers only.

What is ChatGPT Pulse?

OpenAI CEO Sam Altman unveiled Pulse on X, which is intended to work as a proactive daily assistant. Instead of having to wait for commands, it conducts async research through the night employing:

- Memory and chat history

- Direct user feedback

- Information from connected apps (such as Gmail and Google Calendar, if enabled)

The following morning, users also get a visual summary of the most important news.

How Pulse Works

OpenAI says that ChatGPT Pulse can:

- Suggest quick recipes for dinner

- Swap progress tips for goals that take longer to see gains in (i.e. triathlon training).

- Draft meeting agendas

- Kind reminders (eg gift purchase for someone's birthday)

- Recommend restaurants for upcoming trips

A Curate button at the end of each update allows users to guide the AI by asking for new topics to be researched in the future.

Privacy Concerns Around Pulse

Pulse, while offering the promise of convenience, also raises privacy concerns. It’s at its most effective when people exchange detailed personal information — including schedules and financial information. This means:

- It does need to have user data read all the time

- Data is being stored and processed on OpenAI's servers.

- Increasing the possibility of risk if data was breached

Altman acknowledged this trade-off, stating Pulse performs “super well if you tell ChatGPT more about what’s important to you.” However, OpenAI has yet to outline how it will address broader user comfort and data transparency concerns.

Key Takeaway

ChatGPT Pulse is OpenAI’s most agentic prompt so far, pulling the chatbot from a tool into an idiosyncratic personal assistant. Its proactive nature, which could be a game-changer when it comes to productivity, also emphasizes the enduring tension between AI convenience and user privacy.
