In a bold move set to disrupt the mobile app ecosystem, OpenAI has announced its own version of the app store, built directly into ChatGPT. Revealed during the company’s DevDay 2025 event, the new platform will allow users to interact with apps using natural language, reshaping how people discover and use digital services.
A New Era of Conversational Apps
According to Business Insider, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman described the new experience as “a new generation of apps that are interactive, adaptive, and personalised — that you can chat with.”
With over 800 million weekly users, ChatGPT is evolving beyond a chatbot into a hub for personalised and interactive apps, directly challenging the app store dominance of Apple and Google.
Now users can ask ChatGPT to do specific things like “Spotify, make a playlist for my weekend road trip” or “Zillow, show me homes in Delhi under ₹1 crore.” It's also put in place the ability to share data, resulting in a privacy-friendly alternative to traditional app UIs.
SDK and Monetisation for Developers
To enable developers to build apps around ChatGPT, OpenAI has released a Software Development Kit (SDK). The company has announced that app submission will be available later this year, and more detailed information about how to monetise apps is coming soon.
OpenAI’s upcoming commerce feature will even allow users to buy things inside ChatGPT.
App Directory and Quality Standards
In addition to the app store, OpenAI is introducing an App Directory to help users find new apps in ChatGPT. Only apps that make the cut, as judged by high standards of design, functionality and quality will be included, Google says.
Conclusion
By introducing its in-chat App Store, OpenAI is presenting ChatGPT as a compelling conversational system that combines utility, interactivity, and personalisation. Not only does this expand the ChatGPT ecosystem, it also underscores the company's sheer desire to challenge Apple’s App Store and Google Play, potentially shaping what digital services would look like.
