If your PS5 feels slower than it did when you unboxed it, you’re not imagining things. With time, even high-powered consoles like the PS5 can start to lag, overheat, or load games more slowly. But here’s the good news: you don’t need new hardware or a repair appointment to fix it.
While you can’t swap out parts like on a PC, there are easy things you can do right now to get your console back in top form—no special tools required. These small adjustments and habits can go a long way in restoring your PS5’s performance.
1. Update Your System Software
Sony regularly rolls out updates that include bug fixes, performance enhancements, and system optimisations. Staying up to date helps prevent glitches before they begin. Head to:
Settings > System > System Software > System Software Update and Settings to check for new updates.
2. Choose Performance Mode for Smoother Gameplay
By default, some games lean into better graphics, not speed. But if you prefer snappy response times and higher frame rates, switching to Performance Mode helps. You’ll find it under:
Settings > Saved Data and Game/App Settings > Game Presets—then set it to Performance Mode.
3. Move PS4 Games to the Internal SSD
Running older games from an external drive can slow them down. If you’ve got PS4 titles on an external HDD, move them to internal storage for faster load times:
Open your Game Library, highlight the game, press Options, and select Move Games and Apps.
4. Improve Ventilation to Avoid Overheating
If your PS5 is in a tight space or collecting dust, it may overheat and throttle performance. Place it in a well-ventilated area and clean the vents regularly. Loud fan noise or lag during play are signs it’s getting too hot.
5. Clear the Cache and Rebuild the Database
Over time, your PS5 can build up cluttered data that slows it down. You can clean it up easily using Safe Mode. Here’s how:
- Turn off your PS5 completely.
- Hold the power button until you hear two beeps.
- Connect your controller via USB, and press the PS button.
- Choose Clear Cache and Rebuild Database.
- This won’t delete your games or saved progress, but it can give your console a fresh start.
Keep It Running Like New
With just a few quick changes and some light maintenance, you can keep your PS5 running fast and smooth—without spending a rupee on upgrades. Whether you're battling lag, slow menus, or overheating, these fixes are simple, effective, and totally DIY.
